Description

In this session, we will go over the ways in which basic cytology skills can benefit the large animal emergency clinic when a clinical pathologist is not available. The session will cover how to make a high-quality slide, and a stepwise approach to slide evaluation. Then, using lots of pictures, we will discuss some key clinical case presentations in which cytology can make a real difference to emergency stabilization and treatment: enterocentesis versus GI rupture; pneumonia versus severe asthma (heaves); septic arthritis versus inflammatory synovitis; septic versus neoplastic pleural effusion; and clostridial myositis versus post-injection inflammation.
